Theatre Festival 2026

On December 27-28, 2026, Sappho For Equality (SFE) organised a two-day theatre festival at Anuchintan Art Centre (AAC), Kolkata. Open to all with free entry, the festival brought together over 100 audience members and featured performances by theatre groups and independent artists from different regions. The programme explored themes of belonging, childhood, gender, environment, memory, lived experiences, and identity through diverse theatrical forms, including movement-based performance, image theatre, and narrative storytelling.

The festival featured productions by Swabhav Meyeder Dol, Santoshpur Anuchintan, QT & The A, Birati Samuho Performers Collective, Gotroheen, Sappho For Equality, and Rumi Harish. Alongside the performances, queer and trans entrepreneurs set up stalls offering handmade crafts, jewellery, accessories, food, and other products, creating opportunities for audiences to engage with community-owned small businesses throughout the festival.

Chaai-Chaapa

Chaai-Chaapa was a month-long multimedia public art exhibition at Porshi, developed from a seven-day residential workshop with eight queer and trans participants. Building on reflections from the Paye Paye Hingsa campaign, the residency created a space to explore experiences of gender-based violence through collaborative art-making. During the exhibition, the entire Porshi space was transformed with site-specific installations, soundscapes, short films, tactile artworks, illustrated notebooks, and interactive displays that invited visitors to engage with themes of identity, memory, care, belonging, and everyday experiences.

Alongside the exhibition, the programme included live musical performances, performative interventions, and curated food experiences that extended the themes of the artworks, creating an immersive environment where audiences could experience multiple artistic forms throughout the month.
